Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated that he was pleased with deadline day signing Danny Welbeck’s debut outing at home in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City this weekend.
Welbeck, who joined the Gunners in a dramatic deadline day switch from Manchester United, played 88 minutes before being replaced by Alex Oxlade Chamberlain after suffering from cramps. He was lively in the first half, most notably when he latched onto a stray back pass and hit the post whilst attempting to chip Joe Hart. Speaking to Arsenal.com Wenger said,
He did well. I believe that he needs to develop his link play with our players but that is a bit normal.
It’s sad that he couldn’t take his chance but overall every time he had an opportunity to find some space he looked dangerous.
There are some things to work on with him to integrate him well into our game but I’m happy with his first game.
Welbeck is undoubtably being thrown in at the deep end with our next game coming against Borussia Dortmund away in midweek, overall we thought his performance was convincing, he gives the Arsenal side a different dynamic that was absent with Giroud. His pace also looks like it will be a real factor playing alongside other speedsters such as Alexis Sanchez, the Ox and Theo Walcott.
The England youngster who was a handful throughout the game will be keen to continue his good start by hitting the ground running with a goal against the 2012/2013 Champions League finalists.
