It is fair to say that eyebrows were raised when Arsenal completed the signing of young Calum Chambers for a staggering fee of what was believed to be around £16m, at the time Wenger noted “The way he adapted to the Premier League last season” as the driving force behind the signing, but this did little to detract from the fact that the 19 year old was a relative unknown.
However, the 19 year old, a product of the Southampton youth system, has thrived after being thrust into the deep end for the Gunners this season as a result of a number of injuries in the defensive department. Arsenal’s other summer signing Alexis Sanchez has quite rightly been stealing the headlines of late although Chambers has arguably been as valuable with his contributions in attack and defence.
When his statistics are stacked up against other leading full backs in the Premier League, the 19 year old is looking very convincing in his debut season for the gunners.
Chambers contributes most notably with the ball and going forward, out of the four players compared above the 19 year old had the highest forward pass per game ratio at 33.54 as well as the highest total passes per game ratio with 52.76. This shows the young fullbacks willingness to go forward as well as the fact that he is not afraid to get on the ball and positively contribute to the game with the ball.
Another key set of statistics for any defender is defensive ones such as Interceptions and Clearances, this is also an area in which the young England fullback excels as he again tops the charts ahead of his Premier League counterparts with an impressive 2.13 average interceptions per game and 5.82 average clearances per game.
Although some may argue that stats only tell half of a story it is undeniable that Chambers has been a welcome addition to the Arsenal squad this season, the youngster’s flexibility over a number of positions has been key in the club managing what has been a difficult period in terms of injuries and his contribution has been notable all season.
Lets hope the 19 year old can continue to go from strength to strength and further justify what some considered a hefty price tag!
