I have a lot of friends who are Arsenal fans much like I am of course. The question that is banded about the most at the moment is, would you offer RVP a new contract? I believe personally that we should see out the final year of his contract. Why? For me it comes down to a few key areas.
1) We have Walcott and Song who’s contracts are coming close to expiring. I believe that as these players are the future of Arsenal, there should be more resources put in to keeping these two lads at this great club. Song is also a reported target for Real Madrid, I personally would like for his contract to be tied up before his head is turned. Mainly to the bright lights of Madrid, but I am sure that for every Real Madrid who would be interested there is a PSG or Inter Milan lurking in the shadows. Before we know it we will have another will he, won’t he saga next summer.
2) We have a lot of young talent in the forward line who should be ready to make the step up to first team football in the next season or two. Campbell is one who excites me greatly, I hope we can get a work permit sorted for the player. He has very much impressed in his loan spell this season with Lorient in the French league. This has been backed up by none other than Gourcuff singing Campbell’s praises.
3) It would free up £25 million pounds to go and spend on another striker. One along the lines of a Benzema or Lewandowski who would have 12 months to gel with Podolski before RVP departs. This would allow for us to have one big push next season with four top quality strikers in RVP, Podolski, Walcott and either of the above. This in turn would give a greater chance of a perfect send off for RVP by either winning the Premiership or the Champions League.
Unlike the issues the club had with Na$ri and Cesc, I believe the club hold the cards at the moment. If they set the president early with this, the club will come out of the situation with it head held high. The risks of allowing RVP to run out his contract being a thirty year old man, are not as big a financial gamble as to giving him a three to four year deal. This deal is being touted as potentially costing the club £25 million pounds in loyalty bonus, signing on fee and wages.
I for one, am very much looking forward to seeing Arsenal line up next season. I believe we are destined for silverware and if the club do the above I will be standing at the Emirates for the first home game believing this will be our season.
