Once again Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been linked with League 1 giants PSG. This is by no means a new rumour, but the Telegraph report that ‘PSG’s most senior figures have been telling members of their circle that Wenger has been persuaded to leave north London after 17 years in charge.’ The French club’s ‘least optimistic’ option would be to capture him at the end of his current contract which runs until the summer of 2014, but they are confident that they can lure the Frenchman to Paris at the end of the 2012/2013 season. Obviously this rumour has no substance in the eyes of many, and here are 5 reasons why we believe the move will not materialise this summer.

1. Wenger has turned down the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and the French national team in the past, why would he leave now for PSG?

2. Wenger is renound for being heavily against the prospect of modern football, where hundreds of millions of pounds are pumped into a club to force success.

3. He generally prefers to build a team from the ground up, whereas at PSG he would not be able to do that.

4. He has a reputation of seeing out his contracts, and why would he buck that trend now?

5. If his claims that we no longer have financial restrictions (December 2012) why would he leave now when he has a chance to properly reinforce this summer and challenge for honours next year.

So, there are our top 5 reasons, obviously there are many more reasons for and against which have not been mentioned. Feel free to put forward your reasons in the comments section and take part in the poll to let us know if you think Arsenal would benefit from this switch.

There has been a lot said about our new signings. Some good, some bad, but mostly good. Podolski and Cazorla (two men who I’ve been developing a Mrs-concerning man crush over recently) are fitting in like hand in glove. Giroud, whom had a fantastic season over in Ligue 1 last season, has stuttered so far.

Previously however, when Arsene says that a previously injured player is like a new signing, in the past I have had a tendency to throw my hands up and say a massive *meh*. However, bar one minor (and non ankle) injury whilst on international duty, Abou Diaby actually does look much like a new signing. His performance against Liverpool was first class, a superb touch combined with some sexy link up play with Caz and Arteta and dribbling that appeared like the ball was glued to his foot. From my perspective, it was really encouraging to see and drew in my view relatively lazy comparisons with that of PV4 and Yaya Toure. But hey, I’ll take that.

I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who grimaced like the international gurning champion who’d just received a particularly large utility bill when I heard that he’d been injured on international duty. But lo and behold, there he was back in the side to face Montpellier. We ground out the victory after a good performance and in particular 2nd half performance from the French club, a less than remarkable performance, a good completed pass percentage and the Guiness world record for the fastest yellow card (I assume) for Abou, but nonetheless 3 points away from home in the premier European club football competition (isn’t that right Sp*rs fans?).

Let’s not shit ourselves in excitement just yet, as the ever hilarious Guy Roux said about Abou – “…He is mounted on two matchsticks with a spot of glue in the middle.” and whilst there is no denying his quality as a footballer, but only 25 appearances over the last two seasons and more damning 5 last season – for which he collected £2.6m, £520k per game (alright work if you can get it I suppose!) – is cause for concern. I have been guilty in the past of asking around his contract expiry date and when we can get shut of him. However, there’s definitely something about Diaby and bar matchstick/glue related problems, long may he flourish.

With the recent acquisitions of French striker Olivier Giroud and Germany international Lukas Podolski it is widely expected that Arsenal will now turn their attention to strengthening in both the defensive and midfield positions. Arsenal have increased their attacking options significantly with the recent signings of these two highly rated players, although, if Robin Van Persie does leave Arsenal it is vital that the club replaces with a quality replacement. With no conclusion to the Robin Van Persie saga as of yet, Arsenal are expected to continue with the clubs transfer plans along with dealing with this ongoing battle. Moreover, several fringe players are expected to leave the club in the near future, with Squillaci widely reported to be heading back to France and Nicklas Bendtner who now has a new agent alerting several clubs including the likes of Malaga and Swansea. In addition to this, the likes of Denilson, Vela, Lansbury, Arshavin and various other footballers currently on Arsenal’s books are tipped to be heading for the exit door this summer. The potential departures of these players will help free up space and funds for any new signings the club wishes to make. Hatem Ben Arfa is a midfield option Arsenal are said to be taking into consideration.

Where Could Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa Fit Into Arsenal’s Plans?

Well, since the departures of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas the North London club is yet to truly replace them. Following a successful campaign at Newcastle recently Ben Arfa could be the player Arsenal are looking for the fill this gap in midfield. Arsene Wenger has been a keen admirer of the French international ever since his day at Marseille as a youngster. If Arsenal want to challenge on all fronts in the upcoming football season which gets underway in August squad depth is vital. The right blend of quality players is what sets a club ahead of its competitors. The lengthy loss of Jack Wilshere last season impacted Arsenal’s hopes of landing silverware greatly and the addition of Hatem Ben Arfa would offer Arsene Wenger the opportunity to rotate between the two players for a starting berth in the attacking midfield position once Jack Wilshere is fully fit.  It is also important to consider the fact that Jack Wilshere is only 20 years of age, still learning his trade and will need to regain his match fitness first before he can play a part for Arsenal next season. Hatem Ben Arfa’s versatility is also a major asset with the player able to play both on the wing and attacking midfield positions. The Frenchman had previously played as a striker at Marseille and if required I am confident he would be able to play in this role once again if needed for Arsenal.

How Much Could Ben Arfa Be Available For?

According, to recent reports although Newcastle would loathe to lose a player of Ben Arfa’s ability but a fee in the region of £16 million may just be enough for the Magpies to part with one of their star players. In my opinion, this price does seem a little steep and if Arsenal were able to negotiate this transfer fee down to about £12 million pounds then this would be the sort of deal that could suit both clubs. The Gunners could also tempt Newcastle by offering some of their fringe players a makeweight for any possible deal. Arsene Wenger is prepared to listen to offers for a variety of footballers on Arsenal’s books so why not use them in a player plus cash deal? According to reliable French media outfit L’Equipe Arsenal have been in contact with Ben Arfa’s agent in recent weeks.

What Stumbling Blocks Are There?

It remains to be seen whether or not Ben Arfa intends to honour his contract at Newcastle or move on if he receives a tempting offer from a club that can offer him the opportunity to play in the Champions League next season. If Newcastle demand a price deemed to be over the odds and do not budge on this price this would likely prevent any deal from taking place at all. The player has also been accused of lacking discipline in the past but Arsene Wenger has been able to handle problems with players in the past and get the best out of them, this therefore shouldn’t be a major obstacle. Consequently, Wenger will know enough about the player by now to judge his character and decide whether he is suitable or not. But with Wenger having declared his interest in Ben Arfa in the past this suggests that the Gunners boss cannot foresee any potential problems that could arise from signing the Newcastle star. Nevertheless, bust ups and disagreements can impact the overall performance and morale of the team as seen most recently from the likes of Samir Nasri at Euro 2012.

Arsenal could really use a playmaker like Ben Arfa who has the ability to dart past opposition players with a great dale of pace and menace, using his dribbling skills to great effect. The 25 year old is not afraid to take on anyone with his pace and he also has a very good long distance shot.

Mum, mum wait I want…that’s the decision Arsenal will have to make. What do they want? Like a kid at a candy shop, but that of a limited budget. Not able to fork out what those “rich kids” with their Sheikh sugar Daddy’s can. So Arsenal must work within their means. Punch above their weigh yet again. But, how is this possible? Arsenal a club bathed in history and tradition, now secondary to that of clubs owned by billionaire owners who simply have inflated football.

Despite, this financial state football is under Arsenal still able to draw interest of high calibre players. Players in the stature of Lukas Podolski who’s signed from German club Köln. But, how much of a risk is this acquisition? Podolski who’s track record at Bayern doesn’t scream at you, and hasn’t really been great in club football till recently.

Last summers “panic buys” were forced after horrid Arsenal performances. Yet again Arsene and Arsenal forced in to compete with the financial muscle by rivals. Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have all spent north of 80 million in the last 18 months. But in spite of this over spending Arsenal have managed to finish above two of the four teams listed. This is great to see value for money in the Arsenal perspective, but one can ask how long until Arsenal falter? Won’t the money eventually surpass the North London side?

But hey everybody loves the underdog. Defying logic and doing the unthinkable. Montpellier hasn’t spent over 3million yet has been crowned French champions, notable to mention ahead of Paris Saint Germain the new rich boys in town. So who’s to say we aren’t sitting here after next season seeing Arsenal lifting the Premier league with some intelligent buys. But who, who should they be?

Shinji Kagawa:

Japanese attacker has been the lynchpin to the Dortmund attack this term, and has made the loss of Gotze midway through the season not an issue, as his form has lifted Borrusia Dortmund to their first ever league and cup double. But, he’s widely tipped to be on his way to Manchester United, as scenes of Sir Alex Ferguson at the German Cup final fuelled the further speculation.

Yann M’Vila:

Young, French, strong and a formidable defensive player, ringing any bells Arsenal fans? If we were going to call for the next Patrick Vieira this would be the occasion. He’s been a major part in the International set up under Blanc’s France, and has been impressive for Rennes. All the ingredients to be a superb player for the Arsenal, but will the unofficial rumours of he’s signed be confirmed? Or is it another might’ve been for Arsenal?

Scott Dann:

A strong defender who hasn’t received the recognition he may’ve deserved. Two seasons in a row playing for relegated sides whose defensive capabilities must be questioned, yet his defensive qualities haven’t. Many pundits believe Birmingham’s poor late season form coincided in his absence, and after defensive partner Rodger Johnson went on pastures new didn’t quite match it. This leaves questions on how good is Scott Dann? He’s young and is relatively on the cheap. Why not gamble for him, he’s a better option than an error prone Djourou.
