Arsenal legend Robert Pires has said that Arsenal talisman and top scorer Alexis Sanchez ‘doesn’t know’ whether he will renew his contract with the Gunners but insists that the Chilean ‘just wants to play.’
Speaking with news outfit La Tercera, Pires, who is currently a coach at Arsenal, praised the 28-year-old for his performances this season, most recently his last minute Panenka penalty to take three points for the Gunners on Sunday. Pires heaped praise on the in-form striker and was especially impressed with his calmness over the 98th-minute game-winning penalty against Burnley.
“It was impressive. He doesn’t know what pressure is,”
“You have to have a lot of balls to take a penalty like that.”
Pires also touched on the sizeable offer Arsenal received for the Chilean over the summer, something Arsene Wenger has already conceded.
‘Everyone is aware of that yes’
‘All we want is for Alexis to stay at Arsenal. I hope he re-signs because he is a wonderful player, the engine of the car. I hope he stays forever.’
The Frenchman also noted that Alexis’ effort and commitment, especially in training, remains unwavering amidst the heightening speculation surrounding his future. Sometimes the Chilean needs to be told to calm down a bit during his rigorous training routine but he rarely responds to warnings from Wenger that he may be overdoing it.
“I see him in training every day. He’s stronger and more powerful. He’s more mature. The way he trains is impressive and he never wants to stop. Wenger and I have told him to take it easy, but he says that if he is on the field, it’s to train.”
It is clear that Alexis’ commitment at present cannot be questioned, despite his occasional negative reactions to being subbed off early the 28-year-old seems content at Arsenal and it seems the ball is firmly in Wenger’s court when it comes to making the right offer. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Gunners need to stump up the cash to make sure their star player isn’t tempted to go elsewhere when his contract runs out.
