Arsenal starts Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez have reportedly shocked the club in demanding wages of £250,000 a week each in new deals currently being discussed with representatives.
Both Alexis and Ozil’s contracts expire in 2018, and the club have made no secret of the fact that securing their services in the long run is a high priority. It now seems that the Gunners may have cost themselves a hefty sum by failing to tie down their stars last summer as the recent Brexit vote is being cited as the driving force behind the astronomical new demands. It is thought that contract talks will take place again when the pair return from the current International break, but Wenger will certainly be worried about the approximate £70,000 p/w disparity in valuation.
Currently, Alexis and Ozil are Arsenal’s highest earners taking home £130,000 p/w and £140,000 p/w respectively, should the Gunners bend to the stars demands it would shatter the club wage structure and could cause unsettlement in the squad. Currently, nobody at the club earns more than manager Arsene Wenger and it is thought that this is by design and the board intend on sticking with it.
One thing that might be worth considering for the Arsenal hierarchy is the cost of replacing the pair with equally as talented individuals vs the price of coughing up the quarter million p/w wages that are being requested. It’s fair to assume that replacements of equal quality would cost at least £50m each, combine that with what will certainly be sizeable wage packets, and hanging on to what we have suddenly starts to make financial sense. The main concern for the Arsenal board will likely be the ramifications within the squad, whilst nobody will deny that the clubs two best players deserve to be rewarded, this certainly would represent a large gap compared to the rest of the squad.
It remains to be seen how the talks will pan out but the hope is that both parties will be able to meet somewhere in the middle and achieve a positive agreement for player, club and fans!
