Championship leaders Brighton look set to complete the loan signing of Arsenal forward Chuba Akpom. The Seagulls, who were one of the shock casualties of the weekend’s FA Cup ties, are looking to add attacking options before the transfer window slams shut tomorrow.
Akpom, who has been on the fringes at Arsenal, spent part of last season on loan in the Championship with now Premier League side Hull. The 21-year-old’s 7 goals during that period helped fire the Tigers back into the top flight. It is believed that Christ Houghton has identified Akpom as someone who will be able to help the south coast side cement their position at the top end of the Championship.
Given the Gunners’ plethora of attacking options, Arsene Wenger is reportedly happy to loan the youngster to get him some game time between now and the summer break. Obviously, this move casts severe doubt over Akpom’s future, many believe the 21-year old’s day might be numbered after failing to make a significant impact when handed opportunities. There were reportedly a number of suitors for the England U21’s services, notably Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce who managed Akpom at Hull last year and will likely have been disappointed to have missed out on resigning him.
Reports suggest that Akpom’s move to the south coast side will be announced sometime within the next 24 hours, meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has reiterated he has no plans to make any signings before the deadline, predominantly due to the timely return of useful players such as Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott. The Frenchman clearly believes that he has adequate firepower at his disposal to mount some form of title challenge as we enter the back end of the season.
