Amongst all the transfer rumours there has been a lot of talk about certain players in the Arsenal squad that people want to see leave the club. The majority of these are either out on loan or didn’t feature much this season. It would be a good idea to sell some of these players to free up space in what seems to be an active transfer window for Wenger. However it could be necessary to keep some of these players as we all know that we have an injury prone squad, this referring to earlier in the season when around 6-7 defenders were all out and we were calling on players from the reserve team to fill in the gaps.

Manuel Almunia – After a strong season from Szczesny making appearances in all Premiership and Champions League games, and Fabianski starting between the sticks in all League Cup games, it’s clear to see that Almunia doesn’t have a place in the team any longer. With zero appearances this season and only 8 the previous, I think it’s fair to say that his Arsenal career is over.

Marouane Chamakh – I was never happy with this purchase as nobody had heard of him before, and his performance in the 2 seasons he’s been here has shown that. With only 12 goals, 1 being this season, and Podolski entering the club I think it’s time to say goodbye to the unimpressive Moroccan and purchase a new back up with plenty of first team experience, and more importantly goals on their record.

Sebastien Squillaci – There’s not much to say about the Frenchman, but 6 appearances this season and no real character shown he doesn’t deserve a place in the Arsenal squad. Even with plenty of injuries in the back four he was never really called on. It’s time we bought an experienced defender who is going to be able to support a somewhat solid, with some areas to be improved, back four.

Ju Young Park – With 1 appearance in the league cup when he first joined the club, and scoring in that game (vs Bolton) I thought he had promise. However with that being his only goal out of a very small number of games, again it’s easy enough to say that we need to sell him and buy a stronger striker to have on the bench behind a starting Podolski, and hopefully, RVP.

Andrei Arshavin – I’m not even going to discuss this, we all know he needs to go; he’s not enjoying it at England and clearly shows no desire to play for the mighty Arsenal. Has to be sold.

Aaron Ramsey – I’m going to disagree with what I’ve seen that we need to give him out on loan, or even sell him, because every time I’ve watched him this season he’s done fairly well. Although he’s made mistakes, nobody is perfect; he had a promising start to his season but just lacked that confidence to make creative plays. Give him time.

Denilson – Showed great promise when he signed for the club, versatile and quick player, just what Arsenal needed. But with no mention on a team sheet this season he needs to be given out on loan so he can get first team experience and confidence to come back for what hopefully is a stronger Arsenal side in a few years time.

Johan Djourou – Numerous appearances this season, mainly due to injuries, he’s not shown the strength and form that Arsenal’s back four really need. With a defender possibly on the cards for the transfer window, he’ll rarely be played however it’s always good to have back up as he has a lot of first team experience. What would you do?

Carlos Vela – He’s already stated he doesn’t want to come back to England. Sell him. Job done.

I’m sure there’s players I’ve missed that people want to see leave so feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments or reply on Twitter who you think we should get rid of. After the majority of these players are sold or placed on loan, we need Wenger to sign experienced first team players in hope that we can win a trophy next season.

After a brilliant end to the season for Arsenal, clinching a Champions League place and finishing above local London rivals Spurs, it goes without saying that Wenger needs to sign defenders for the new season. Looking at the finished table Arsenal conceded the most goals out of the top 8 clubs, and there were many games in which this could have been prevented with a stronger defence. There were many points in the season we were calling on reserve players to fill in gaps due to an injury hit squad, which is what we can’t do against the quality of other clubs. Despite a strong and improving back four of Sagna, Koscielny, Vermaelen and Gibbs another player with first team experience would be essential to ensure more results going Arsenal’s way.

This is where the rumours of Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen comes in. He’s a versatile player for the Dutch club and can cover many positions, showing great determination and skill in all of his appearances this season. After following him closely I can see he plays a very similar game to that of Vermaelen, who without a doubt was one of our best signings of the season, the problem with this being is their likeliness to both go on the attack constantly. Vertonghen has announced his desire to play in the Premiership, with Arsenal fighting clubs such as Spurs, Manchester City and Manchester United to pen a deal, it could all come down to financial matters. I believe Wenger should try his hardest to sign Vertonghen, no matter the cost or contract agreements, because he’s a strong player already praising Arsenal for their style of play.

Despite the heavy links of a move to Tottenham, it is still a possibility of signing the Ajax defender and we expect to hear news of his interests in the next few weeks seeing as he is out of contract at the end of their season. Vertonghen could also solve our problem of our defensive/creative midfield troubles as he has adapted well to this position in Ajax’s season. Wenger is famed for his ability to train players to play in other areas of the field, most notably Lauren and this season Francis Coquelin. However one defender will not be enough to ensure we are always able to field a solid back four, so Wenger needs to keep his eyes open for experienced defenders looking for a move, rather than young players who won’t be able to fill the gaps of players such as Sagna or Vermaelen if they were to miss games.

Keep the faith.
