As I write this Arsenal have just beaten Brighton in the cup, have another championship side in the next round in Blackburn and sitting on the back of a five vs one victory over West Ham. We are four days away from the close of the transfer window and my guess is that we will not be signing anyone in it. There are many reasons as to why Arsenal will not be spending any money and for me the main one is the fact that Wenger will not allow himself too.

There are many possibilities for this and I will list off a few.

1) Wenger cannot find quality to improve the current squad.

2) Wenger is happy that he has two players for every position.

3) Wenger has set himself a wage budget for the season which the club wage structure is at the top end of.

4) We don’t actually have the £100 million that both the board and manager have confirmed is there.

5) Wenger is not wanting to spend the cash because he is wanting to give his replacement the best possible chance of replacing him.

For me personally and my own opinion is that we can forget about points one and two. I could name five players who we could sign who would improve the squad. Villa, McCarthy, Jovetic, Shaw, Hummels. All five we could sign and still have money over to keep for a rainy day. Arsenal have a quality top six don’t get me wrong but clubs like the Manchester duo have at least a quality top ten.

By saying that we have two players for every position limits us to playing one formation. If we decided to mix it up and play 442 we would be missing by my calculations two forwards. We have one for every position playing 4231 but not 442 or 343.

The next three points are the reason why I cannot see any benefit from Wenger moving upstairs once a new manager comes in. Wenger has to much power at the club and would in a round about way do to Arsenal what Abramovich does at Chelsea. Wenger would still make the decisions on who comes to the club and what wage they should be on. It would suffocate the squad, coaching team and most of all the manager. It is going to be one big task to step in to Wengers shoes as it is with out having the great man scrutinizing every decision made.

Wenger has recently said that he sets the wage structure at the club and that he wants no player to be on a massive wage difference from everyone else. This is the reason why Almunia was on 70K a week and Bendtner on 60k. The two Manchester sides are happy to bounce about 250k a week for player and for me I am glad that Wenger has not gone to this level. I can also see why Nasri, RVP decided to leave when they see players of poor quality getting paid around the same as they are. I don’t regret losing these players as we made good money out of them and built a more balanced squad from the sales. This is also the reason why we do not make marquee signings the kind of signing we need to start challenging again at the top and not see a top four finish as a victory.

It has been widely reported by anyone with power at the club that we have got money and it has been said to be 100 million in the bank. Give this money to Martin O Neil and he will spend the lot and moan about not being given enough money then sulk and leave just as the season starts. Give it to a manager like David Moyes and he will spend what he needs to improve the squad and would save half for a rainy day. For me the new manager has to be one who understands and has achieved at a club where money has been at a premium so will not spend for the sake of spending.

This moves on nicely to the last point and the fact that Wenger could potentially go to PSG or Madrid at the end of his contract in 2014 and Wenger wants to give the next manager every chance of building a squad. One he wants to allow Arsenal to move forward and challenge for major honors, I just personally hope that Wenger will allow for the new manager to blossom with a handshake of (don’t you muck up my hard work). If Wenger does get a role on the board then he has the potential to limit Arsenal moving forward as he will have control on everything from wages to purchases and maybe a say in picking the side.

I must stress that I am not in the Wenger out brigade and have all the time in the world for the great man. I just believe that if he wanted to move upstairs to the board that opportunity passed two seasons ago. There is now to much pressure on him to deliver a trophy and if he fails to do so by the end of his contract he will take it upon himself to assist the new manager in getting that trophy. I feel Wenger has the potential to be a great ambassador for Arsenal and hope he comes back one day in this capacity.

I was having a chat with @NickyPetrou whilst watching the Arsenal game against Wigan on Saturday and we were discussing the best ways of moving forward as a club. I posed the question, “Now that Arsenal have come out an said they have £50million to spend who do they spend it on? the player’s ideally cannot be cup tied, and would want to actually come and play for Arsenal.”

We paused for a moment and actually thought about who would fit this bill, It actually turned out to be a question we very much struggled to answer… For me I would sign Thomas Ince, James McCarthy and a striker. My reasoning is that Ince has the potential to exceed his father in terms of ability and he for me is a better prospect than Zaha. People might not agree but watching both play my mind has been made up. McCarthy from Wigan has been a shining light this season. He reminds me a lot of a young Steven Gerrard in that he can ping a pin point 50 yard pass, he drives the midfield forward and when required can sit and do the donkey work of winning the ball back. The latter is what Arsenal find hard sometimes. The Petit, Grimandi, Gilberto Silva kind a player. The player who allowed Viera to roam forward on his runs, the player who was the engine of the side. The unsung hero.

Maybe some say Ba is the striker Arsenal should be signing, for me no he is another player who would be a certainty to end up on the three week injury list (which turns in to three months.)

We need players who are fit and ready for stepping up and proving themselves. As a forward I would quite like for Arsenal to look in purchasing Lewandowski. I think he might not be around until the summer but I would try and hold off until then if it was possible. Theo is proving himself to be a worthy candidate for that central role and I want for him to be given a fair crack of the whip. In his two games he has show intelligence with his movement of defender to free up space for the midfielder’s to move in to. He has pace which frightens the life out of defenders, this in turn forces the centre backs to drop a little deeper. Again this allows for more room for Carzorla and Wilshere to get in the lines between midfield and defence. Arsenal look better with Theo through the middle that is for sure. If he stays fit it will take the pressure of making the big marque striker signing until the summer.

The quote of the day though was from Nicky when he said “Not enough praise for Gibbo’s worldy cross field ball for Walcott to win the penno…” Absolute class.

So the question I leave you with is if you had £50 million pounds to spend on players who would improve the squad and who would come to play for Arsenal who would you choose???

Merry Christmas one and all…

After Sanga became the latest player to want out, we have noticed that Wenger has changed the goal posts on how he wants to see Arsenal move forward. He no longer will tolerate anyone taking on the good name of the club. Wenger would be the first to admit that he has been guilty of this with the likes of Cesc and Na$ri to name but two.

Song said he wanted a better deal, Wenger stood his ground and said “show me you deserve the pay rise”. Song decided that he would sulk instead, Wenger told him there and then he had no future.

Fair enough Song went on to leave for Barcelona but a Wenger of old would have done all he could to try to keep the player at the club. Then when the player gives that extra season playing at 70% you can see that they are not giving 100% so it is a waste of time as the squad suffers.

Wenger has also confirmed in his most recent press release that his project is flawed, bringing in under valued players developing them to be world class players. When these players become World Class they want the money and leave the club for more money. Loyalty is going from the game. I cannot say gone simply because of players like Giggs and Scholes who stayed at Manchester United for there whole careers. Then you look over to Spain and Messi who has just signed a new six year deal to stay at Barcelona. Success breeds loyalty to and this is another reason for the failure of Wenger’s project.

Now on to the positives, today five young British talents signed new long term contracts. All five have a huge future for club and country, this also shows how Arsenal have gone full circle from no British talent to a squad full. With a potential for six British players playing at the same time in the Arsenal first team. We need to make sure that Walcott signs the new contract and we should meet him halfway. In the game on Monday against Reading Walcott was impressive, he for me deserves the right to play through the middle. I get frustrated by listening to so called Arsenal fans say Walcott is rubbish sell him…

The guy is our top goal scorer, he is our top assist maker and all from if being honest being a bit part player this season. If I was Walcott listening to these people I would be on the phone to RVP asking how much greener the grass is in Manchester. I would never forgive the club for spending seven years making Walcott the player who dominates the player stats to allow for him to leave without a fight to keep him.

The January transfer window is around the corner with the club saying they have 50 million to spend well I say save some of that cash and give Walcott the contact he deserves.

I sit here asking myself where do I think Arsenal are going to finish this season? The answer is I don’t actually know.

On one hand we have lost RVP and Song which was the instigation of how Arsenal were evolving last season. To now an Arsenal squad which is completely differnet with three great signings in Cazorla, Podolski and Giroud coming in. You have to ask yourself if Arsenal had sold RVP and Song to then replace them with these three International players, would you have been demanding Wenger spent some cash on the last day of the window?

Wenger said that he had learnt from this time last season, he did so by getting in the players he wanted early without being ripped off. One way to look at it is Wenger signed these three players and Real Madrid signed Modric. Which would you rather? If people knew Wenger had £40 million in the kitty every player Arsenal looked at would have been worth £40 million. RVP despite his ill timed statement agreed with the club to hold a press silence to allow for Arsenal to do these dealings before putting himself on the market.

RVP did his dues last season by helping us get to third and we shouldn’t forget that. Signing for Manchester UTD was not a move that a true boyhood Arsenal fan would have done. He will never been forgiven for this action and instantly made himself more hated than Na$ri. That is for him to live with…

In my eyes UTD are a club in decline. I honestly believe that we will finish above UTD this season. You have to ask yourself, how long can the richest club in the world (in terms of revenue) have to rest there hopes on a 37 year old player?  This is not the Manchester UTD which have been dominating the premiership since it creation. Who would want to replace Fergie either when he decides to retire? Trouble is a foot for them.

Arsenal have both Chelsea and Manchester City this month, come out of September unbeaten and Arsenal will be in a position 100% better than we were at this point last season. We look like the Arsenal of the nineties at the back, we have a captain who for once looks like he wont be leaving in the near future. This will breed stability though out the squad! It was only one game but Diaby played against Liverpool like a man possessed, if he can stay fit for the seasonthen who knows? We also have a certain Mr Wilshere to come back before Christmas. Arteta and Cazorla will between them link the play. Then you have Podolski who has the energy and understanding to support his left back. This has to be the influence of  Bould and I for one like it. The team has a balance to it like one not seen in the last five years.

Bergkamp and Henry both took over half dozen games to get off the mark, Giroud is not a Berkamp or Henry. He certainly is not a Chamakh either, let’s get this clear right now. The goals will come, he gets in the right places and that is 80% of the battle won.

To  conclude, we can achieve success this season if we play the ways of old, I guess for now it will be playing the 1 nil to the Arsenal instead of the free flowing football of the invincible’s. Who would care if we have a trophy in the cabinet at the end of the season at the Emirates?

I have a lot of friends who are Arsenal fans much like I am of course. The question that is banded about the most at the moment is, would you offer RVP a new contract? I believe personally that we should see out the final year of his contract. Why? For me it comes down to a few key areas.

1) We have Walcott and Song who’s contracts are coming close to expiring. I believe that as these players are the future of Arsenal, there should be more resources put in to keeping these two lads at this great club. Song is also a reported target for Real Madrid, I personally would like for his contract to be tied up before his head is turned. Mainly to the bright lights of Madrid, but I am sure that for every Real Madrid who would be interested there is a PSG or Inter Milan lurking in the shadows. Before we know it we will have another will he, won’t he saga next summer.

2) We have a lot of young talent in the forward line who should be ready to make the step up to first team football in the next season or two. Campbell is one who excites me greatly, I hope we can get a work permit sorted for the player. He has very much impressed in his loan spell this season with Lorient in the French league. This has been backed up by none other than Gourcuff singing Campbell’s praises.

3) It would free up £25 million pounds to go and spend on another striker. One along the lines of a Benzema or Lewandowski who would have 12 months to gel with Podolski before RVP departs. This would allow for us to have one big push next season with four top quality strikers in RVP, Podolski, Walcott and either of the above. This in turn would give a greater chance of a perfect send off for RVP by either winning the Premiership or the Champions League.

Unlike the issues the club had with Na$ri and Cesc, I believe the club hold the cards at the moment. If they set the president early with this, the club will come out of the situation with it head held high. The risks of allowing RVP to run out his contract being a thirty year old man, are not as big a financial gamble as to giving him a three to four year deal. This deal is being touted as potentially costing the club £25 million pounds in loyalty bonus, signing on fee and wages.

I for one, am very much looking forward to seeing Arsenal line up next season. I believe we are destined for silverware and if the club do the above I will be standing at the Emirates for the first home game believing this will be our season.
