Live in Australia, NSW, Sydney been an Arsenal fan for only a short time, but in that time i have learnt more about Arsenal and Football than i have for anything else. I have always believed in Wenger since the start of the season, only lost faith once when we lost to Milan and got knocked out of the FA cup by sunderland in the same week. In Arsene We Trust. COYG

For 2 successive Summer transfer windows, Arsenal FC, have sold their 2 best players, one to a rival club and the other to Barcelona, and yet somehow, Arsene Wenger has managed to make the team look stronger not only on paper, but on the field as well. I firmly believe that this season, will be the best for Arsenal football club in years, and may end our Silverware drought, that has bogged us down for so long.

And here are the 5 reasons as to why:

  • Team chemistry
  • Lack of a big ego
  • Great transfer deals
  • The “Bould” effect
  • The transformation of Mikel Arteta

In truth all 5 are inter-related somehow, and form this wonderful football club we have at the moment, but I will discuss each point in detail and why they might lead us to glory.

Team Chemistry

Something that I think cost us greatly last season and the season before is team chemistry. It wasn’t that we didn’t have it all, our chemistry was on show in all those comeback wins we had. But at times I thought we looked out of it, disinterested, unmotivated, and this had something to do with the players chemistry between one another. Of course, we will never know for sure what’s going on behind the scenes, unless one of them writes a book about it. But I think there was certainly some sort of rift between the players and somehow, it led Robin van Persie to believe that we weren’t interested in the winning whether it was true or not, I guess we will never know, but the outcome of it was, we lost not only Robin, but Song as well.

Lose bad eggs, add talent and motivation = Right Chemistry

Lose bad eggs, add talent and motivation = Right Chemistry

This season however, it seems like our players are finally gelling together. On the field, Cazorla, Podolski and Giroud are already working well as a team, Arteta has been simply immense. The back line is moving back and forth as one now and we no longer look like the headless chickens we did at times last season when we got countered. The link up play between Cazorla, Arteta and Podolski has also been influential in the games against Liverpool and Southampton and will be important if Arsenal is to break their trophy drought this season. On the training pitch, team chemistry has been evident as well. They seem happy playing together, working together, and are always seen having a laugh or having fun. This may seem like a small thing. But it will definitely be important in the later stages of the season, especially when if/when we lose form and the going gets tough, the players must be able to pick each other up if they are to win a trophy this season.

A lack of a big ego

One man team they called us. To be honest, we really were. 40% of our goals were scored by Robin van Persie last season. That means 4 out of every 10 goals Arsenal scored, were finished by RVP. That’s the definition of over-reliance right there. We were lucky that more teams did not just try to man mark him. He saved us on so many occasions. Winning a man of the match award once every 3 games, he was invaluable to the team. Alex Song was a strange case, but I think his ego played some part in it as well.

Big Ego, big hair, big loss NOT

In the last 2 or 3 years, we have gradually lost a group of players such as Robin and Alex. All these players seem to have this idea that they are better and/or more important than the club. This “better than the club” mentality was prominent with the transfers of Van Persie to United and Nasri to Man City. Both these players moved on to our modern rival clubs. Many criticise Wenger for selling our top players, but I think what he did was right. We have replaced the players with the “better than the club” mentality with players that love our club, and love playing for our club. I think this is important if we are to be in contention for titles and trophies this year. You can see this with the way we celebrated Koscielny’s goal vs. Manchester City this season. I don’t think we did something like that at all last season after we scored…

Feels like team spirit – Oh Yes boys!

Great Transfer Deals

Santi Cazorla – I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE WE SIGNED HIM. He is by far, Arsene’s best transfer deal in the past 4-5 years. Santi is easily Real Madrid and Barcelona standard, and perhaps would’ve ended up there if it weren’t for his age, his move to Malaga for big money last season and the fact they already have enough creative midfielders. If he was English he would have easily cost us £35m+ but thank god for Arsene, because we managed to get him for only around £15 million reportedly. Long range shooting, prominent with both feet, free kicks, incredible dribbling and passing skills that are up there with the likes of Xavi, Ozil and Iniesta. Santi Cazorla has everything you want from a Creative midfield player. Not only does he finally fill that void left by Cesc Fabregas 2 years ago, but he adds so much more. He is also versatile and can play on the wings or holding midfield if required. Able to play both left and right side. In short, he is amazing.

i Can’t believe we got these two guys

Lukas Podolski was also another great addition. Unlike Cazorla who was filling a void left by someone, I feel that Podolski was not meant to fill the void left by Van Persie. He is now essentially playing as a Left wide Midfielder, linking up brilliantly already with, Cazorla, Arteta and Gibbs. The left flank at Arsenal FC looks complete now. Gervinho was far too inconsistent last season, and Ramsey was definitely not suited playing on the wings. Podolski also adds a clinical finisher to the team, another free kick taker (as shown by his beauty vs Southampton), a friend to Per Mertesacker and most importantly experience. He has 100 caps in international level. His vast experience on the big stage will be vital for Arsenal FC this season.

Olivier Giroud….too be brutally honest, I doubted that he would be successful at Arsenal. I honestly even thought Solomon Kolou might have been better. (??????) We could’ve done better. Edin Dzeko would have been amazing. Clint Dempsey would have been superb and is always criminally underrated. Olivier Giroud? His movement is impressive I will admit. But I think his position on the pitch (as a target-man CF) does not suit our game style. As long as Arsene has faith in him however, so will I, and hope he will start banging in goals soon. Or he could prove to be another Chamakh. But I will keep my faith.

The “Bould” effect

The term coined in by Arsenal fans due to Steve Bould’s involvement and influence on this current Arsenal team, in particular when we are without the ball. The Arsenal defence has been outstanding this season. I know it is early. I know we have a long way to go, but we look SO MUCH better than last season don’t we? We defend as a team, and attack as a team, yet when opposing teams break, I don’t skip a heartbeat and close my eyes waiting for them to score, because I have faith on whoever is defending, our back line is defending as a line, compact and deep, and it is great to see. We have only conceded 6 goals in 8 games so far this season. In the first 10 games last season we conceded 19 goals (including the 8 against United, though I think if you looked at the starting XI that day, we were always on a hiding to nothing). That says it all really. Steve Bould has done an immense job.

Bould Effect?

Another thing I have observed is that in attack while we play the standard 4-2-3-1 with Cazorla in the trequartista role with (the currently injured) Diaby and Arteta behind him. We change into a 4-4-1-1 with Podolski and Chamberlain dropping to left and right midfield roles leaving Cazorla in the space between the midfield line and Giroud/Gervinho. What this has meant is that we have played a very rigid, compact, deep defensive line, ensuring that the opposition could not get close enough to the box to get a shot in. This was very prominent in the Liverpool game.

Last season we looked frail, weak, fragile and lazy at the back, in particular against a team who can play long, or are good against set pieces, this season however (barring the Chelsea game) we looked composed, confident and our work rate has been superb, especially Jenkinson and Gibbs on the flanks. It is very promising to see. Steve Bould might just be the best signing Arsenal make this season…

The transformation of Mikel Arteta

Arteta, our vice-captain for a good reason! He is the heartbeat of our team he really is, if he is not ticking, the Arsenal team are not ticking. This was obvious in the Chelsea game because when he was mistiming his passes or tackles, Arsenal would not tick also. Everyone knows of his passing count and passing accuracy stats this season. However, all this was much the same for us last season. So what has changed this season? In short his positioning has. Last season he was our main creative outlet along with Alex Song. They would at times, work in tandem, when Song moved up the field Arteta would sit back, when Arteta would move up, Song would sit back. It worked beautifully most of the time, but some of the time, Song would go up when Arteta moved up, and there would be huge gaping holes between our defensive line and midfield and this cost us many goals and many points.

The transformation of Mikel Arteta

This season however, we have bought a proper trequartista/ Creative attacking midfielder in the form of Cazorla which means Arteta can now sit back and be a holding midfielder for 90 minutes. It has been simplicity at its best. Song got criticised last year for lacking composure and not playing for the team, but I think it was just too complicated. Fluidity is good, but too much of a good thing can have negative consequences. What Steve Bould has done I think, has made things simple. Not sure whether this was Steve Bould’s influence as well, but Podolski’s work rate in defence has been a pleasure to on the left wing as we were too used to seeing Gervinho or Arsharvin not supporting Gibbs at times last season.

I think most of you know why the holding midfielder/ Defensive role that Arteta plays now is important in any team but here is a great piece on it EPL index

http://www.eplindex.com/18927/role-defensive-midfielder-433-important.html

In conclusion, we have made vast improvements from last season, that much is obvious, but what pleases me is how much more potential we have got, Jack Wilshere just started in his first game for the under 21s after 14 months. Frimpong is back, Sagna is back and Rosicky is back in training. It is important to note that the Chelsea game did not really mean much in terms of our development and long term contention, because in truth, Chelsea always had a better squad than us (Editor disagrees!)and we were out-played tactically as well and lacked lady luck. But what counts is how we come back from it. It is sad to see Diaby injured again. As he was finally showing the promise and potential Wenger has been telling us in the past few seasons. He really looked like the final missing piece of the Arsenal starting XI that wasn’t a holding midfielder, but rather a ball-playing, rampaging mid-fielder, in the mould of Yaya Toure or Patrick Viera. I hope he comes back soon. The Walcott situation I won’t discuss, as I don’t think we know enough about it to be honest, as most of it is happening behind doors. But I would not be too fussed if he left in January, as long as we get a good enough replacement.

It’s not that we are moving two steps back one step forward, but rather, I think we are moving one step back two steps forward. Yes it is annoying. But people must understand that we do not have the financial power (and irresponsibility) of the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, the Manchesters, Chelsea etc. we can’t compete with them in transfers. But what they have in individual stars, we can match as a whole team. I don’t think we will win the UCL or EPL no matter how much I would like to believe it, but we are due for a trophy this season. Whether it is the Capital One Cup or F.A Cup that is the question…

My thoughts on our dealings on deadline day

I will not say much for this section, as what I think has already been said by millions of Arsenal fans already, but I think what we did was a lot more beneficial to the team, than what fans and critics made it out to be. We got rid half of our deadwood, in Bendtner, Vela, Denilson, and Park. We have kept those who we think we need this season in Arsharvin and Djourou, and I assume Chamakh and Squilacci are so bad that they didn’t even get offers from other clubs.

I was frustrated like many, when I found out we didn’t buy a single player, not even a loan, to the club on deadline day, we should’ve bought a Defensive Midfielder, for squad depth, but instead we will be praying for the whole season that Diaby is over his injury problems, and that he and Arteta can stay fit, because i don’t think Coquelin is ready to play 20-30 games a season just yet, no matter how good or how much potential he might have. I think a striker was not necessary until we loaned out Bendtner, but now that we did, we will only have theoretically, 2 proper strikers, in Giroud and Chamakh. CHAMAKH.  Maybe Wenger sees something in our youth? Or maybe he hopes Chamakh will show his class he showed earlier in his Arsenal career? Whatever the case, it’s a huge risk to go into this season with only 2 proven strikers (Walcott really wants to be a striker but I don’t see how he’s gonna get a start in the centre in the near future).

Many say we need a LB but I disagree, I think Gibbs and Santos are fine, and Vermaelen can do a good job when they are both unavailable. RB however, was more needed, Sagna is currently unfit, Jenkinson is still young, tho he has played well in the last 2 games in terms of defending at least (and remember the main role of the wing-backs is to defend) and also Coquelin can play there if needed. Centre back we are fine as well, Djourou and Koscielny will be our cover for now, as Mertesacker is paying well. I wish we got rid of Squilacci though…

Pre-match Liverpool

Now back to business! No more transfer rumours!

ARSENAL are yet to CONCEDE a goal this season which is rare for a team under Arsene Wenger. I was surprised to see Gervinho start ahead of Walcott last week, and I think he is better suited to the left than the right, he seems more suited to cutting in left to right, and while play on the right he seemed to stop and look for a pass to teammates rather than do something spectacular like the goal he scored in Cologne. I think Walcott will start. The rest of the team should be the same as last week assuming we don’t get any late injuries. Szczesny, Fabianski, Sagna, Frimpong, Wilshere and Rosicky are all still out with injury.

Probable line-up

Mannone
Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs
Cazorla, Arteta, Diaby
Walcott, Giroud, Podolski

Liverpool just like us, have had a horrid transfer season when compared to last season’s, getting rid of the likes of Adam, Carroll who they had only just bought last season, and only loaned in Nuri Sahin as a replacement but he is likely to start in today’s game, which should be interesting as Liverpool and Arsenal were after him in the transfer window. It also means Podolski will be up against Sahin again, as they have versed each other numerous times in the Bundesliga back when Nuri was in Dortmund and Podolski was in Cologne and Bayern Munich.

Probable line-up

Reina
Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique
Sahin, Gerrard, Allen
Borini, Suarez, Sterling

Liverpool has only won 1 of their last 10 EPL games against Arsenal. Only Arsenal (19%) have a worse shooting accuracy than Liverpool in the premier league so far this season (24%), but expect this statistic to change as both teams like to play a similar brand of attacking, passing football.

Final prediction

Even though the Gunners are yet to concede or score so far this season, recent history suggests that this game has goals in it. I think there will be goals but not as much as say 4-4 (ARSHARRVVVIIIIIN) speaking of which, I think it’s possible that Arsharvin or the Ox could come from the bench and have an impact on the final score. I am confident of a win.

STOKE PREVIEW

Arsenal travel to the Britannia today to face what is arguably their bogey team, Stoke. They have a great home record against us with a draw and a win recently, so if you have been worrying about this clash like I have this week, you have every right to be. Thankfully for the gunners, Tony Pullis has a few injury worries and suspensions to deal with, with Jermaine Pennant In doubt, and Dean Whitehead will be ineligible, as he was sent of last week against Reading. Arsenal face a side similar to the Sunderland team last week, who will try to sit back and defend, using the physical approach to disrupt Arsenal’s style of play (Rugby club). It would be interesting to see who starts for Arsenal in the forward line, with Giroud and Podolski probably now 100% match fit, and Gervinho playing well. Either Arsene starts Gervinho, with Podolski in the middle or he starts Giroud, pushing Podolski to the left. Walcott is a certainty to start. The midfield trio of Diaby, Arteta and Cazorla should be the same, as well as the backline, assuming no late injuries strike. However Szczesny was in doubt earlier this week, and will be given until the last minute to prove that he is match fit. So it should be interesting to see who starts if he or Fabianski to start, but I have faith in both (yes, even Fabianski), however I don’t think Mannone will be in contention, as he proved in the pre-season fixtures he is still lacking that quality and match-experience that is required to play at the highest level.

KEY MATCH-UP

This one would have to be Per Mertesacker vs Peter Crouch, the 2 tallest men in either team, happen to be on the same area of the pitch. Stoke will be likely to play their normal long balls up to him, and long free throws, so it will be up to Per, to make sure Crouch doesn’t get anywhere close to the Arsenal goal. Both are probably equal in speed (slow), strength, and physical ability, so it should be an interesting battle to watch. Hopefully Vermaelen can help cover Per too at times, as Crouch is a very decent player indeed.

Key Player to watch

Many will probably say Cazorla based on his performance last game, and I don’t blame them, he was great. But an important player who has gone under the radar somewhat, I think is Abou Diaby, who has played incredibly well so far considering how long he’s been out his battle with injuries. His physical presence will be important as well, to counter Stoke’s style of play. Gervinho will also be a key, as I think this season really is his season to shine for us, he now has some proper competition in the squad in Podolski and the Ox, and it should hopefully motivate him to improve himself as he still lacks the final ball/pass. If he could work on those things, he might just prove to be as good as Arsenal legend Robert Pires one day (as he said he wanted to be on arsenal.com)

“”You should always look at these examples from the past,” Gervinho told Arsenal Player.”Robert is a fantastic player, very experienced, and I saw this for myself [when Pires was] training here.

“I really hope to emulate Robert Pires in my second season, hopefully do even better, but I hope to carve out my own niche of course.”

People just have to remember this is only his second season.

And I won’t be doing a prediction thing hat I normally do, as they are often always wrong, so im just gonna say it is most likely that Arsenal are going to lose or draw, because we are playing away.

TRANSFER SEASON NEWS

Today, it is with sincere regret that I announce the retirement of Real Madrid player Nuri Sahin who confirmed his loan move to Liverpool earlier this week….HAHA just kidding. To be honest, I don’t think it would’ve been much of a gain or a loss either way. Sure I would have been excited to see a new player arrive, but he is only a LOAN, he is only benefiting Real Madrid in the end. It is rumoured that Liverpool didn’t even get him with a purchase option after the loan, so all they will be doing is help Real Madrid and Sahin’s development in the long term, but at least they have improved their squad depth a bit. We will just have to wait and see if he proves to be a success at Liverpool or not, and if Arsene made the right decision in not buying him.

In other news, as we missed out on Sahin, Arsene now only has 1 week left to replace Song, it would be interesting to see if he buys a player that is a “like-for-like” to Song, maybe say M’vila who his team, Rennes, just got Jean Makoun on for loan, and the Rennes manager even hinting that it’s a possibility that M’vila might leave for Arsenal soon with:

“For the moment we have three offers. There is even a chance Yann (M’vila) could stay at Rennes this year but now Alex Song has left Arsenal we must say they will reinforce that post.”

So the ball seems to be in Arsene’s court right now, will Arsene make an offer? We shall wait and see.

Other transfer possibilities I think include, Everton Midfielder, Fellaini, Newcastle midfielder, Tiote, and the other French defensive midfielder Capoue, who I think is a better option than M’vila personally. Out of all these targets if I had to rank them in order in terms of who is best suited at Arsenal are:

  1. Marouane Fellaini
  2. Etienne Capoue
  3. Yann M’vila
  4. Cheick Tiote.

Fellaini has played brilliantly for Everton already in vs Man united last week, and West Brom yesterday, he is young, physically better than all the options, and has a bigger afro than Song, Tiote, although a good player at Newcastle does not seem to be an Arsenal type player. M’vila is a player who plays like Song, but Capoue seems to be a more defensive player. Arsene has many options, I think that without a doubt, 1 of them will come in this week as Arsene has said he is already looking to bring in one “world-class central midfielder”.

In other positions, as the Theo Walcott contract negotiations drag on, rumours about possible replacements pop up, this time in the form of Spanish winger, Jesus Navas. Yes he is a good player, but I really would rather us keep Walcott, as I think he will be the future of Arsenal when he grows up into the player he can possibly be, has so much potential. I hope we renew his contract this week.

To sum everything up, I have a feeling we will get the 3 points today, and I also think we may be announcing a player arrival or departure after the game, As well as one during the week, and one on deadline day, August 31st. We still have a lot of deadwood to get rid of.

I can’t wait.

COYG

NB: 2 hours before kick-off, 2 pieces of news/rumours floating around twitter right now: Mannone might be starting today as apparently both Szczesny and Fabianski are out and M’vila to Spurs. Watch this space.

Wow what a transfer window we’ve had so far eh? First Robin’s statement insulting our club by claiming we weren’t ambitious, forcing Arsene to go buy players, Arsene trying to convince Robin, by buying the likes of Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, but on Wednesday Robin decided to basically stab Wenger in the back after all Wenger’s done for him (stuck with him through all his injuries) and go to arguably Arsenal’s biggest rival: Manchester United.

Season Preview –

Transfers so far:

INs: Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud

OUTs: Kyle Bartley, Carlos Vela, Denilson (Loan), (insert name here), Joel Campbell (Loan), and Ryo Miyaichi (loan), Almunia

In terms of our buys this season, all 3 were on show in the first half verses Cologne, and I have to say, I’m very satisfied indeed, not completely happy, but the purchase of Cazorla (pronounced Cathorla apparently), is a monumental signing in my opinion, because it finally fills the gap that was left by Cesc Fabragas last season, where the Centre attacking midfielder sits, or trequartista as I like to call it. He has great vision and passing ability as seen in his 45 minute stint in Cologne, and already looks like an Arsenal player. Lukas Podolski, was quiet for most of the half, but still showed some class with the penalty and the finish for his 2nd goal. Giroud on the other hand, was active throughout and unlucky to score 2 or even 3 goals in the half, as the keeper was able to parry most of them away, but his movement off the ball was excellent and both will be key figures after the departure of he-who-must-not-be-named.

Future Ins:

I think Wenger is likely to make a couple more signings, Real Madrid Mid Nuri Sahin is likely to be loaned out to either Livepool or Arsenal, and at this stage, im not sure who will win the race, but it will be good cover for Song. Speaking about Alex Song, it’s even more likely that he is leaving this summer, as Barcelona are apparently preparing to steal another Arsenal player (not again),  so it looks like Sahin’s loan deal is dependent on Song’s possible departure, at least Arsene has a couple of days this time! A Centre-back could also be purchase by the end of the transfer window as Bartley as left the club, and it was likely that he was going to play a role, as he was only just called up into the first team. Who it will be? I don’t know. Also id still love Clint Dempsey to come to Arsenal, as his future is still up in the air, but it is becoming more and more unlikely, as his transfer to Liverpool draws near.

Future Outs:

In terms of players to leave, I am surprised not more have left Arsenal to be honest, in particular, the “deadwood” which includes the likes of Squillaci, Djourou, Arsharvin, Bendtner, and more…at least we got rid of Almunia, albeit on a free. Expect 2 or 3 of these players to leave, though it is unlikely that both Squillaci and Djourou will go, it will be one or the other, same as with Arsharvin and Bendtner, with Bendtner more likely to leave.

Key players:

Vermaelen has been given the captain’s armband for this season, and Mikel Arteta has been given the Vice-captaincy, fittingly I think they are number 1 and number 2 on our most important players this season. If Vermaelen can organise the defense, stay fit, keep clean sheets, maybe even score a couple of goals or six, along with his normal defensive duties, we should have no problems with our defence. Arteta, will have the role of organising our midfield, controlling the tempo, maybe even free-kicks, and hopefully have a wonderful partnership with Cazorla who will probably contribute the most assists. Song would be here, but It looks like he’s leaving unfortunately (as I write this, terms between the 2 clubs have been agreed). I think Podolski is going to score a majority of the goals, but Giroud will score the crucial ones. Jack Wilshere has been back in training for us, and will be key in the later stages of the season, as lastly, Theo Walcott, who will want to prove that his days of inconsistency are far behind him, and maybe so-and-so’s move has given him breathing room and and space to shine this season. In truth, every Arsenal player will be key this season, but this is just a selection of players who I think to people should keep an eye out.

Final Verdict:

This upcoming season seems a strange one, in terms of Arsenals position, once again, we are in transition, and once again, we have to prove the doubters and critics wrong. I think we would’ve been title contenders, if we’d kept the Ex-captain, and signed Benayoun permanently. I would’ve been more satisfied, maybe even happy, with our transfer dealings, but we have bought well at least so far…but if there’s any man that can do it, it’s Arsene Wenger, how he’s kept us at the top for so long, I don’t know but its why we love him. The trophy drought will end this year in my opinion, but it’s more likely going to be the Carling cup or FA cup, Arsenal to finish 3rd again and retain that coveted UEFA Champions league spot for next season. Baby steps.

In Arsene We Trust.

Pre-match

This weekend kicks off the last round of the English Premier league for season 2011/12. A season with many highs and lows, the definition of a roller-coaster season. Now the gap between 3rd, 4th and 5th is just 2 points, with a win to Arsenal sealing an automatic Champions league spot for next season. It could prove even more crucial because if Chelsea win their final against Munich, this could mean they steal 4th position’s champions league spot. Last week we were very lucky to keep 3rd spot with Spurs drawing to Aston Villa 1-all after being a man down and Newcastle losing to an excellent Manchester City outfit 2-0. Arsenal were both lucky and unlucky to get a 3-3 draw against Norwich but played poorly throughout even though thanks to RvP once again, we almost completed an amazing comeback, but due to a lapse of concentration allowed Morison to snatch a late equaliser.

As we cannot simply rely on other teams getting results like last week. It is crucial to ensure we claim the 3 points this week against West Brom as they will be a tough opposition, as well as to silence those critics who claim we always “choke” at the end of the season.

Team News

Chris Brunt has been ruled out while Jerome Thomas remains in doubt for the Baggies. Peter Odemwingie should be available for selection after missing the last game.

Meanwhile, Walcott could either start or come off the bench for the gunners as he tries to recover from the hamstring problem he suffered in the Chelsea game. Keeper Wojciech Szczesny should be fit for the clash after a rumour that he was injured midweek. However Bacary Sagna has been ruled out of not only this game but also out of Euro 1201 after fracturing his fibula, meaning Arsene will either select Coquelin or Jenkison at right back for the gunners.

6 Fun facts

  • WBA have only scored 19 goals at home this season (same as Wolves) but they have only conceded 19 at home (same as United) .
  • Robin Van Persie also needs just 1 more goal to break Henry’s record of most goals in a season.
  • This game will be West Brom manager Roy Hodgson’s last game in charge before becoming England manager ahead of Euro 2012.
  • This game will be Arsene Wenger’s 600th game in the Premier league as Arsenal manager.
  • Arsenal have not lost on the last day of the season since 2005, when they were defeated 2-1 by Birmingham City thanks to second-half goals from Walter Pandiani and Emile Heskey either side of a strike from Dutchman Dennis Bergkamp.
  • Only once in 39 years have West Brom beaten Arsenal on their home turf – a 2-1 win in October 2005.

Final Prediction

The baggies are sitting in 10th place and safe from relegation, but it will be important to give manager Hodgson a nice send-off for all that he’s done at the club. Midfielder Paul Scharner would also like to bow out on a high note from the club, after confirming his exit from the Hawthorns.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have something worth fighting for in 3rd place, Automatic Champions league qualification and more incentive for Arsenal captain and striker Robin Van Persie to stay next season and renew his contract. It could also provide more incentive for other players to join the club during the upcoming transfer window. This could also be Yossi Benayoun’s last game before heading back to Chelsea next season, assuming he doesn’t sign for Arsenal permanently.

2 key men who I think will have a big impact on this game are Peter Odemwingie and Yossi Benayoun. Peter has been in good form for the Baggies throughout the season scoring 10 goals in 25 appearances along with 2 assists and his Dribbling and finishing will threaten the Arsenal back four, especially if they look to target whoever is chosen to replace Sagna at right back, as both Coquelin and Jenkinson are inexperienced. Benayoun has also been in good form recently with his professionalism,  technical ability and support play playing a key role in the last few games not to mention scoring a beauty in his last game which also happened to be on his birthday. It would also be nice to give Yossi a good send-off, as he has repaid his faith that Wenger and Arsenal fans have put in him when he was required to play. I would personally like to wish Yossi all the best for his future, wherever he may be next season,  hoping he signs a permanent contract with the gunners.

In conclusion, it is sad to see such a wonderful and brilliant season come to an end. We have had many ups and downs. 2-8 to man united, 5-3 to Chelsea, 5-2 to Spurs and lastly that 1-0 win verses Man City to name a few. We fought hard during the mid-season and even had a 7 run win streak recently, but as the players  became tired, lost motivation and became complacent, wins became hard to come by, in fact we still haven’t won a game without midfielder Mikel Arteta.

If our defense can stay strong and compact, and midfielders provide enough support to the wingers and RvP, I think we should come out on top, but it wont be easy being an away game and all. I think it will be a tight game, but Arsenal should come out on top, a 1-0 or 2-0 victory to the Arsenal.

All though its unrelated to the actual game, the title itself is still up for grabs with Manchester United and City both on equal points on 86, as well as the last relegation spot between QPR and Bolton. Hopefully, United win and City lose because I would hate Man City (especially Nasri) to get their hands on the title.

There have been many events in football that has reiterated my theory in my previous blog in the last 2 weeks. The theory that Arsenal is due for some trophies next year! (not just one).

Guardiola confirms he will quit Barcelona at the end of the season

Last Friday Pep Guardiola revealed that he had informed the Barcelona FC board of his intention to leave in October, citing extreme fatigue as the reason behind it and expressing his intention to take a long rest. His assistant, Tito Vilanova, will now take the reins for next season.

Barcelona and Arsenal have had a long standing rivalry in recent years in the UEFA champion’s league, with the gunners being knocked out by the Catalan club several times in recent years and even beating them in a final. No one can forget the Red card that was given to Robin Van Persie just for being offside in which the referee deemed he was “time-wasting” by taking a shot after the whistle. Afterwards, Van Persie described the referee’s decision as a “total joke”, claiming that with the noise of the 95,000-strong crowd he could not hear the whistle and who could blame him? The incident potentially cost us the game, the tie and the tournament in the end, as we bowed out with a 3-4 aggregate score line. Arsenal’s first and only Champion’s league final appearance in 2005-06, lead to a loss to Barca and I imagine there must have been a lot of heartbroken Gooners there also. To rub salt into the wounds on Arsenal fans, on top of all the UCL clashes, was the Cesc Fabregas transfer saga, considered as possibly the most protracted transfer saga of recent times.

He made 49 appearances in all competitions during the 2005-06 seasons at Arsenal, notching up plenty of assists and goals, cementing his starting 11 spot in the Arsenal squad, and creating a positive relationship with the fans, to the point where Wenger actually made him captain, following the departure of William Gallas. However, before the start of the 2010-11 season there was much certainty concerning the future of Cesc Fabregas as the transfer rumours were flying left right and centre. Even though the rumours started almost as soon as he started becoming captain they only started being concrete last summer, with Barca making several bids of around €25 million and €30 million with the eventual offer of €34 million with a further €5 million in variables, ending the saga. Samir Nasri, a key player in the same years, left in the same transfer window to Manchester City, and this made Wenger look like a fool as he said Arsenal are not a big club if they sell Fabregas and Nasri. On-field this lead to 3 bad results in a row, with a draw to Newcastle (who back then many expected them to be an easy win for Arsenal), a 2-0 loss to Liverpool and lastly that humiliating lost verses Old Trafford which I will not tell the score line…

All in all, there is certainly some sort of relationship between Arsenal and Barcelona, and hence why I feel the need to blog about Pep announcing his resignation. It also means an end of an Era of domination (hopefully) by Barcelona, not only in the Champions league but in Spain also, his record at Camp Nou included 13 titles in 4 years which contained many Champion league, La Liga, Supercopa and Copa Del Rey titles. So it was a HUGE surprise to me when he announced his retirement, as this was only his first season without success. It also gave me even greater respect to both Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson as they have stayed at the top for many seasons, untroubled at least on the surface, by the English media. Especially, when you consider how the other top clubs in England such as Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool seems to get rid of their managers as if they were simply tissues you can throw away. Sure Pep’s resignation is a massive loss for Barca, Spain and football in general, but other top clubs in Europe will be itching at their chance to be the top dog. As will Arsenal.

Arsenal, in the same period, has had NO success at all…and by success I mean trophies. OK I understand that at the moment 3rd place will be an achievement of sorts when you consider our start to the season, there were people who were even predict us to be relegated for Christ’s sake! but thank god for Arsene Wenger, we would truly not be even in the top 4 at this point if it were not for him, we have had a true roller-coaster ride both in the long terms, season by season, and short term, game by game.

The signing of Lukas Podolski

I think it would be an understatement to say that I was surprised when this was announced on not only the Facebook and Twitter pages of Podolski, the Koln website and lastly the Arsenal Website, 2 weeks before the season finished, let alone at the start of the transfer window. When you compare our deadline day deals of Mertesacker, Arteta, Santos and Park this deal proved to be a satisfying relief, hoping that Arsene has learnt his mistakes of leaving transfers to the last minutes. If Podolski is as successful as Arteta this season, we have a reason to believe we can challenge for trophies next season, especially if Wenger signs a couple more players, and does a majority of the points I discussed in my previous blog, we should have a much more fruitful season ahead of us.

I think a priority now would have to be the renewing on Robin Van Persie’s contract, as now every other signing is just a bonus. When you analyse our squad the real problem area was back up striker, with so much burden on RvP and with the signing of Podolski hopefully lifting this burden, the likes of Chamakh, Bendtner, Vela etc can either fight for their place in the team, or leave. Of course we have 2 other problem areas, the space between the midfielders and forwards and behind the midfielders. Even though Song is meant to be a holding midfielder at our club, I still feel he gets forward too much and leaves the defence venerable. He would also not have to go on the attack as much if we had a quality Creative Attacking midfielder (or trequartista). In short, I’m Hoping the next signing is Kagawa.

Wenger has also confirmed and insisted that the club will open contract negotiation extension talks with Robin when the season is over, and even intends to keep him if an agreement is not reached. This hopefully means Van Persie will stay whether he does sign a new contract or not.

“We will sit down with him at the end of the season,” the Frenchman told reporters on Friday. “I believe he is committed to the club.

So hopefully either way RvP will stay at Arsenal, if other clubs don’t bid for him that is.

Conclusion

Now, with Pep Resigning I think it’s a signal that a changing of the guard may take place soon at the top of world football. Of course It may not be Arsenal, and I am prepared for disappointment, but why shouldn’t we give it a go? Why shouldn’t we challenge and hopefully win all titles we are playing in next season? I guess we will just have to wait and see…

My preview of the Norwich game:

Win at all costs, no injuries, pretty much that’s about it. It is also important to note, it will be Yossi Benayoun’s birthday, Arsene Wenger’s 900th game (which is a colossal feat in modern football – to stay at one club for so long) and probably be Pat rice’s last home game, so there should be huge incentive to win this game, as well as hold 3rd spot, of which we are only 1 point ahead of 4th placed Newcastle and Tottenham. If we win our next 2 games, we will hold 3rd sport even if Newcastle and Spurs win both of their games, so this game is crucial in terms of final standings. I’m Predicting a close game, maybe a 1 or 2 nil win to Arsenal.

Our very own striker Robin Van Persie was crowned the PFA player of the year award and I strongly believe this will be the start of many awards and trophies to come at Arsenal at least in the next decade. His award was well deserved though there was strong competition from the likes of David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Joe Hart and Wayne Rooney. I will admit I was worried when Robin was suffering his dip in form while Rooney and Aguero were still finding the back of the net, but Justice was served as Robin proved that his record-breaking year was better than the rest.

And by record breaking I mean, scoring 27 goals this season, the highest number of goals by anyone in the EPL with 27 at the moment, (keep in mind though Rooney scored 2 goals last night to be on 26 goals), becoming the 17th player to reach 100 goals for Arsenal, and beat Thierry Henry’s Arsenal record for most goals in the calendar year, though coming 1 short of Alan Shearer’s premier league record.

The Gunners’ skipper has drawn praise for his performances this year with PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor saying: “He has been amazing, when you think of Dennis Bergkamp, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Marco van Basten he is in that mould of absolutely top-class strikers that Holland manages to produce.”

Technically speaking, it is Robin Van Persie’s award and his alone, but in football, the assist is as important, if not more important than the goal, with the likes of Arteta and Song being a crucial part in Van Persie’s record breaking season. Therefore, his award is effectively the whole teams, and the whole team performed like this due to the full support of Staff, Arsene Wenger, and the fans. So overall I think, this award not only goes to Robin Van Persie but to the rest of the club and will be one of many awards.

The possible future…

So what next for Arsenal? Well, chances are Van Persie will get the Golden Boot award, though his form has been slipping as of late, and only scored 1 goal through a penalty in the last 6 games. Rooney is 1 goal behind RvP with 6 goals in his last 6 games, and Robin should really look to score more goals if he wants to get that golden boot award.

The long term future however appears to be bright with the possibility of the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ryo Miyaichi, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott to be the hub of a world beating team.

At the back end of last season our defence was frail, weak and frankly pathetic. In the last 10 games we only won games against Manchester United (where Ramsey was man of the match) and Blackpool, and I’m sure everyone remembers that the reason was our inability to defend set pieces and lack of composure at the back. This season, thankfully, wiped our memories of this and despite our current back four of Kieran Gibbs, Thomas Vermaelen, Lorient Koscielny and Bacary Sagna being injured for most of the first half of the season, they (along with keeper Wojciech Szczesny) have managed to keep 18 Clean Sheets this season, and that includes keeping the best attacking team in the Premier league in Man City scoreless.

Why the big turn around? I hear you ask.

The major difference I think between last year’s team and this year’s team is 2 things: Experience and belief. The experience was gained from both playing together and experiencing the harshest of fans and I think the transfers rumours of Christopher Samba and Gary Cahill bounced them back into action and made them realise their positions were up for grabs. Experience was also purchased from Everton with the brilliant Spanish Maestro Mikel Arteta joining the team on the last days of the transfer window, who I believe is the buy of the season. The tall German Per Mertesacker was also a good purchase, and was decent in defence in the beginning and Middle parts of the season, but a season ending injury meant many judgements had to be put on hold. We wish you well Per on your recovery and hope you are fit and raring to go next season.

Lorient Koscielny in particular has had the most impressive transformation since the mix up with Sczczesny at the final in the Carling Cup, and has turned into the most fearless, composed, technically gifted centre back in the premier league, behind only Vincent Kompany, in my opinion anyway. His tackles against Chelsea in particularly impressed me as even though we werent able to find the back of the net ourselves, he ensured that we kept the blues scoreless. Vermaelen, Sagna and Gibbs, too ensured a great sense of consistency and developed that fine balance between defence and attack. However this season, I think, the back 4′s campaign has been highly underrated but hopefully a successful European Championship, could get them the recognition they deserve.

Belief came from a number of factors, from the belief of the manager himself who put the faith in his team almost 24 months ago, to the belief the fans gave when they were down 8-2 in Manchester and especially when we were 2 goals down in the spurs game. I still remember the Arsenal supporters chanting, even after Adebayor scored the penalty. We quickly got 2 goals (including a beaut from RvP) and came into the break 2-2. I don’t know how all you fans felt at the break, but I was seriously confident. This time last year with our defensive frailties, I would’ve been thinking “damn, this game is over” but last year was the past, and I believed, as im sure 50,000 gooners did that day , believe we would win, and comprehensively we did too. Most importantly we believed in Theo Walcott, which I don’t think we have in any other game, but that’s for another blog.

The best news I’ve heard in the last 6 months at least, and what sums up what im trying to say, is what Vice-captain Thomas Vermaelen said about hoping he can repay the faith shown by Arsene Wenger. Vermaelen praised the loyalty of his manager through his time on the sidelines with ankle and calf injuries this season.

“I have never known a manager so loyal to his players. He shows immense trust and has shown incredible loyalty towards me,” he told the Mirror.

“I was sidelined for a long time with two nasty injuries. But it was under the orders of the manager that the board gave me a new contract until 2015. I can’t describe the joy that gave me.

“I have no intention of leaving this club,” he said. “I feel at home in London and I feel that I have become a real Gunner. Arsenal is my club. In my eyes, they belong to the absolute elite of European top clubs.

“When I was young, I dreamed of playing for Ajax and Arsenal. Both dreams have come true. “

“I have become a real Gunner” he says… if only more players said more things like this such as RvP then I wouldn’t feel so worried about them not renewing their contracts, but apparently Robin will have 72 hours between the last game of the season and before he flies out for the Euros, to make a decision on his future.

Loyalty and belief are components of all the great teams in previous history are made off see, the current Barcelona team, Arsenal Invincibles, Manchester United and many more. It is encouraging to see that we have finally got rid of those players that are not loyal and do not belief such as Nasri and Fabregas and now we are reaping the rewards of believing in Arsene’s philosophy.

If we are a to be a force in the next decade, I think we need to do a couple of things first:

;

  1. Renew contracts of Robin, Theo, Song and other important players that will be crucial to our success in coming seasons.
  2. Secure 3rd spot this season, and ensure we get into the Champions league, this will motivate not only our current crop of players, but maybe entice a couple of foreign players.
  3. Improve or get rid of our Deadwood. Players such as Chamakh, Almunia,
  4. Sign players to fill the gaps in our team, particularly a creative midfielder or Shadow striker like Gotze, Podolski or Dempsey. The Chelsea game proved to me that our team is still lacking in that area where Fabregas used to play, whether it was to play the final ball into the box, or go himself and score. Maybe Arsharvin ,Carlos Vela or someone already in the team can come back. Another area I think we should build on is behind the midfield, as I noticed in the Chelsea game, at times Song was so high up the park he was not even playing in his usual role as holding midfielder, and I think a guy like Yann M’Villa would be great. This spot is also important to fill because Vermaelen likes running into the box and we need to ensure someone is at the back supporting the other defenders.

If we can do these 3 things, I think we can be a force not only the in the English Premier League but in the Champions League. There is a saying that “Rome was not built in a day”, it may be too early and too cocky to call it now, but I think we have the makings of a Rome. We face many challenges ahead, including what to do with our reserves who don’t make it into the first team and who will replace Pat Rice, who has been a key figure in Arsene’s philosophy will probably leave at the end of the season.

We have possibly endured the lowest of lows now its time to enjoy what I believe will be Arsenal’s most prosperous period in history (even more than the invincibles) and if we do make it at least I can go back to this blog, and say I predicted it and if we don’t, well… I don’t think 1 opinion piece out of billions of others on the internet will jinx something as big as this. We best be ready.

Firstly, sorry to all the readers and recent followers out there for not being able to publish a blog in the last 2 weeks, our website has been down on and off and I was unable to upload my preview of the Arsenal vs Wigan game. Moving on, Arsenal play Chelsea at the Emirates on Saturday, and although this is not a Do or die clash, it is the last “big game” Arsenal has this season, so it will be crucial for the end of season standings. I will go through all the important fa

ctors leading up to the big clash and my final predictions.

Arsenal Vs. Chelsea

Who is playing and who misses out?

For Arsenal, the 2 main players who will be largely missed in the side, will be Yossi Benayoun, ineligible to face his parent club, while Mikel Arteta has been ruled out with a ankle injury that has unfortunately forced him out for the rest of the season. They have both been in spectacular form recently and will be a big blow to the team. Arsene Wenger however insists that these absentees will not be an issue:

“It is not ideal but we cannot complain, we have to overcome that,” said the Frenchman. “We are in a situation where we have four big games. You always expect in April that not everybody will be on board and I think our game is based on collective play. That is why we have to focus on our team play and not think about who is here or not here. “(From Arsenal.com)

Good news for gunners ahead of the game, Koscielny will be back from suspension and will almost certainly be picked in the back 4, ahead of Djourou. Coquelin and Diaby are also back training with the squad but I am uncertain on who will be on the bench if not both. Everyone else is fit.

Chelsea have injury problems themselves with key defenders Branislav Ivanovic (suspension) and David Luiz (ankle injury) set to miss out. Expect Chelsea to play a back 4 of Bosingwa, Terry, Gary Cahill and Cole. Relief for Arsenal fans however, as Didier Drogba looks set to also not play in this clash, as he has played in 2 games in 4 days last week, but may make an appearance off the bench. Torres looks set to start, which should give Arsenal hope, as Drogba has been in devastating form against the gunners.

The Oxlade conundrum

An interesting problem that Arsene may have (or have not depending on the way you look at it). Is whether to start Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the 18 year old, who has shown more promise than any of the youngsters in this squad, to the point where Arsenal fans are increasingly frustrated as to why he hasn’t been given more game time. With Arteta and Benayoun set to miss the game, it means that both Ramsey and Gervinho may have to start but neither has been in great form.

Nevertheless, Arsene may be tempted to give in to the fans’ calls to start Chamberlain this weekend, but where he plays could be the issue because he is both competent in the middle of the park, or on the left wing. As this is a crucial game, I think Arsene may possibly even do neither and start both Ramsey and Gervinho and expect his philosophy of having faith in his players to eventually pay off, playing Chamberlain later on in the match once again.

How will Chelsea play after the Barcelona game?

Chelsea must be knackered after that game as Barcelona ran rings around them even though Chelsea still came on through with the victory. Barcelona had 72% ball possession and 24 attempts on goal but were unable to break through the Chelsea wall and find the back of the net. Expect Arsenal to be much more efficient than this. Chelsea may or may not decide to play the same way as they did midweek, but either way, Arsenal should play a similar style of football to Barca. It is also important to note that Drogba was the one who scored for Chelsea and won’t be available this game.

Final Prediction

Whoever starts or plays in this game, expect it to be a feisty, exciting and tight contest between the 2 greatest clubs in London. Expect the previous game to have no influence in this game which ended 5-3 in favour of Arsenal and honestly, probably the best game Arsenal have played this season (on par with 5-2 vs Spurs). I’m also expecting the previous form of both Chelsea and Arsenal to be irrelevant here because clashes like these often finish the opposite of what everyone predicts.

However I’m going to and have a stab at a tight 2-1 win to Arsenal with goals to Robin Van Persie (who scored a hat-trick last time around) and Juan Mata to net for Chelsea.

Hopefully, by the end, London will be red once more.
