Arsene Wenger is reportedly ready to reignite his January interest in Hamburg youngster Hakan Çalhanoğlu, the attacker has made significant waves in the Bundesliga this season and could be looking for a way out this summer.
Arsenal have been widely rumoured to be tracking young Turkish attacking midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu and hope to fend off competition from Liverpool to sign him in the Summer transfer window. The 19 year old midfielder who prefers to play through the middle in a number 10 role played 28 games for HSV this season, recording 11 goals and 4 assists, he poses a particular threat from set pieces where he has produced some fine strikes over his short career.
Blind speculation is one thing, but Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer has confirmed Arsenal’s interest whilst reiterating the fact he is hoping Çalhanoğlu commits himself to the club for the long term.
“I really do not think Hakan is excited to extend his contract.”
“But when Arsenal show up at your door maybe the guy is thinking about.”
This seemingly confirms that the interest is there although only the avid Bundesliga watchers are likely to have heard of or witnesses the youngsters exploits. Hakan Çalhanoğlu joined HSV from Bundesliga second division side Karlsruher SC in the summer of 2012 and since then he has gained recognition across Europe and earned his first cap for Turkey thanks to head coach Faith Terim. It is no doubt Çalhanoğlu’s move to HSV has been a success as he continues to thrive playing amongst players such as Rafael van der Vaart, Johan Djourou and Rene Adler.
Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s agent Bektas Demirtas has recently added more fuel to the fire by revealing that his client has attracted the interest of a few English clubs, but he expects a bid to come in from Arsenal.
He recently told the Daily Star:
“We know of Arsenal’s interest.
“I think they will make a concrete move soon.
“Hakan and Hamburg has been a success story – our wish is that he stays here and continues to evolve.”
It is difficult to say how much Çalhanoğlu would be available for in the Summer but with interest from other parties around Europe it is likely that his price tag could soar above his estimated market value of £3.5m. It is defeintely an interesting proposition although many Arsenal fans may question whether we are in desperate need of another attacking midfielder considering this is probably the strongest area of out team with players such as Mesut Özil, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky.
It would certainly be more encouraging if we were making moves to strengthen areas where we need support such as defence and up front. At the business end of the field Olivier Giroud is really starting to show signs of fatigue which have been evident recently with a lot of decent chances passed up all too easily.
What do you think? Would Hakan Çalhanoğlu be a good signing in the summer or are we better off focusing our efforts elsewhere that would be more beneficial to our title hopes for next season?
