According to Spanish newspaper ‘Cadena Ser’ Arsenal are set to sign Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista from Spanish side Villarreal tomorrow for a fee believed to be in the region of €20 million.
The 24 year old centre back has played a crucial role in Villerreal’s lengthy unbeaten run in La Liga since the beginning on November and many have compared his style to that of Laurent Koscielny. Paulista, who has not been capped for Brazil, has made 37 league appearances for the spanish side and Arsene Wenger reportedly has plan’s for him in the long term when Per Mertesacker has seen his best days.
The news broke via twitter where @ElSpanishGooner wrote the following,

‘Cadena Ser’ are a well respected organisation who have a history with transfer news although the validity of the story has been somewhat questioned by the fact that Paulista is in the starting lineup for his side for this evening’s game against Getafe.

I guess it is not too farfetched to believe that he could simply pack his bags and be off within 24 hours but I am somewhat skeptical. Anyhow, it will be interesting to see how this develops as it would be nice to secure a defensive signing as early as possible so we can avoid a deadline day rush which has become something of a event in the past few years.
