With only 10 days remaining in the transfer window Arsenal fans are still in the dark over possible transfers. Given the current situation regarding squad depth, yesterday’s bench was a prime example, you would expect Wenger to splash a little cash!
Arsene Wenger is looking to quell fears from fans due to the lack of activity during the transfer window so far this month. He recently told reporters that the team is working very hard to find players. He said that,
“In January it is difficult to find the players that are really better and can give something special to the squad. The number is right. We have a good balance. We are working very hard to find what we want.”
Wenger believes that the squad is in “very good” shape overall and a transfer will have to fit in well with the club in order for him to make one.
Having conceded some silly goals this season Wenger is keen to sure up a unpredictable defence with a potential move for Schalke’s central defender Benedikt Howedes. Howedes has been a target of Arsenal in the past and the defender has surprised many in the Bundesliga by delaying contract negotiations with his current team. Arsene Wenger is said to have been impressed with the youngsters performance in both CL legs when Arsenal clashed with the German giants earlier in the season.
Howedes current contract with Schalke is through 2014 and the team claims he made the move so that he could focus on the rest of the season. If the 24-year-old German international is indeed picked up by Arsenal, the team would get a defender who is rated as one of the best in the Bundesliga and one who has been eyed by scouts for a couple of years now. One potential flaw in the move would be the fact that he is cup tied in the Champions Legue, but you cannot question his quality otherwise.
