As the Friday deadline for the closing of the transfer window draws closer it becomes more and more apparent that Arsenal will be standing pat and will have a relatively quiet deadline. There were some rumors about Theo Walcott perhaps being sold but those appear to have been shot down by Arsene Wegner himself. At the same time all ideas about any new signings appear to be just wishful thinking.

There are both positives and negatives to this quiet window in my opinion.
Let’s take a look at the big positive. The squad will be much more settled. Arsenal had a flurry of signings near the deadline last season and it took several matches before the new players were able to be integrated fully into the squad. It could be argued that this adjustment period cost the club several points in the table.

Now for the negatives.
First and foremost Arsenal has SEVERAL dead weight players who have no chance to crack into the first squad this season and these players are a huge drain on available funds. It was hoped that at least a few of these players could have been loaned out but even now that seems unlikely for many of them. In addition to the financial concerns squad chemistry is also a concern anytime you have want away players.

And finally my biggest concern is the idea that more depth is needed. I still feel that it is imperative that Arsenal add defensive help either in the midfield or along the back four. Last year a rash of injuries caused Arsenal to use many young players who were out of their depth featuring in Premier League matches. There are no guarantees that the injury bug will not strike again. And the only thing that will cure that type of problem is depth.

On the whole I feel the squad still remains scarily thin. If there are any injuries or a player or two falls out of form the season could take a nasty turn. I think the only thing that truly separates Arsenal at the present moment from the teams that are favored to hoist silverware is the lack of quality depth. But as always in Arsene We Trust. The boss feels as though the squad can compete and I am lemming enough to follow him off of a cliff is need be. At least I will have a good night’s rest on deadline day.

One comment on “Arsenal at the Deadline!

  1. Lets accept they have sold Song but replaced with who? Sagna is a world class player in his department and he is out, now which world class player replaces him? Then, the next in line to be sold will be vermeleen, this is because everybody seems to have been following the trend. Then Wilshere is also likely to be sold if he blossoms. The vicious cycle will continue because the greedy board is still at the helm of affairs. So with the trend it seems Wenger is at best a champions league qualifier manager, not even a league winner. If his son becomes a manager, i bet you he will win the champions league before wenger. Check in the champions league pot 1, apart from Arsenal which club have failed to win champions league trophy at least once before? At best he is at the level of taking Essien(Chelsea’s reject) on loan. What a shame picking crumbs from Chelsea’s table yet he is the highest paid manager in EPL without any good cv. Your reply will be highly appreciated.
