Arsene Wenger looks willing to spend this season. With Podolski already confirmed and M’Vila on the horizon, now would be a good time to review what our line up should look like next year. Here is the line up, with the signings that have been confirmed/who I think we should sign.
GK – Szczesny Okay, it’s safe to say he didn’t have the best of times against Norwich on Saturday, but he’s still young and mistakes are to be made in order to develop. I do believe, however that we need a back up goalie, which I do have a suggestion for, whether it’s possible we can get him remains to be seen. Marc-Andre ter Stegen, a top quality keeper now from what I see and he has bags of potential, which has been recognised by Germany coach Joachim Low, who has named him in his provisional squad for Euro 2012.
RB – Sagna This is when he’s fit. It was unfortunate for him to break his leg for the second time this season, so I do believe we may have to invest in a back up RB to keep the squad depth there.
CB – Vermaelan and Koscielny The obvious CB pairing. Vermaelan and Vertonghen would also work if we could get a deal for him, with them both being Belgian and being cousins, there would be amazing chemistry between the two. Mertesacker would be a rotation choice with Koscielny.
LB – Vertonghen/Gibbs With Vertonghen’s versatility to play at CB and LB (and even CDM!), he would be a fantastic signing. I’m not sure yet whether he’d be first choice over Gibbs or not, but I definitely think he’d be higher in the pecking order than Santos, who is a bit too attacking minded for my liking, and should be trained to be a Left Winger.
CDM – M’Vila/Song With all the rumours on Twitter today (7th May) about M’Vila signing, he would be a quality choice for our holding midfielder. I have heard him being compared to Vieira, who I feel we have missed that sort of player since he left. We can’t forget Song, however so it would have to be rotation/fitness which decides who gets the spot. Also, both can play in CM too so again, we would have squad depth for any injuries should they occur.
CM – Arteta and Wilshere Arteta has been such a key player for us this season and this has been shown since he was injured. We have seemed to be lacking something in the midfield and Arteta is it. The other CM choice would be Wilshere for me. As I stated before, this is up for rotation as Song has assisted RvP many times this season, so he would be another good choice for a creative midfielder.
RW – Walcott Many might disagree with this one but on form, Walcott is another key player for Arsenal. His pace leaves defenders for dead and although he has been criticized for his final ball many times this season, he still has a bag of assists to his name. He can also score goals when he wants to, with 11 goals to his name (8 in the league.) Oxlade-Chamberlain would be the rotation option for him.
LW – Podolski Many called this the worst kept transfer secret in Premier League history, but when the deal was finally confirmed on the Arsenal website on Monday, it caused much excitement amongst Arsenal fans. With the ability to play on the LW as well as up front, he is a better option than Gervinho, who in my opinion will take his place on the subs bench for Podolski. All we have to hope for now is that he is NOT a replacement for RvP.
ST – RvP Need I say more?
BENCH – Benayoun (if we sign him permanently), Oxlade Chamberlain, Gibbs, Song/M’Vila, Rosicky, Gervinho, Mertesacker.
